The Ashes & the Axe

  1. Westfall Ashes

Harper grew up on a farm in Westfall, back when that still meant something. Then the bandits came over the hill one autumn night with torches. Her family ran. Harper picked up the wood axe from beside the door and walked the other way.

She drove off five of them alone. The farm burned anyway. In the morning a priest from Sentinel Hill stood in the ashes and muttered an old word over what was left: exstinctio, the ending of a thing. Harper asked what it meant, nodded, and took it as her name. If something was going to end, it would be on her terms.

  2. The Recruit Nobody Could Break

The militia at Sentinel Hill took anyone who could hold a weapon. Her drill sergeant spent a full month trying to break her: double watches, the worst kit, every dirty job in camp. She did all of it, said nothing, and was still standing at the end of every day.

At the end of the month he handed her a real axe and told her to stop scaring the other recruits. She did not stop. She just got better at it.

  3. The Mortal Strike

A veteran in Stormwind taught her the strike that defines her now. One heavy, perfectly timed blow with a two-handed weapon, aimed so that the wound will not close properly. Healers can pour everything they have into it and still watch it bleed.

That suited her completely. She has never needed things to die quickly. She needs them to stay hurt, stay angry at her, and stay away from everyone else.

“Bleed if you have to. Never kneel.”
  4. Every Upgrade Earned

She started with a farmer's leather apron and that same wood axe. Every piece of plate she has worn since was taken off something that was trying to kill her at the time. The old axe hangs on the wall at Sentinel Hill, and she checks it is still there every time she hearths home.

These days she is on WoW Forever, at the front of every raid, arguing about loot and usually winning. She knows exactly what her next upgrade is, where it drops and how many times she has already killed the thing that drops it. She will keep killing it.

III · The ClimbGear progression

From Greens to Glory

  1. Step 1

    Questing Greens

    Uncommon

Hand-me-down mail and whatever fell off a gnoll. Everybody starts somewhere, and she started in Westfall.

  2. Step 2

    Dungeon Blues

    Rare

Run it again. And again. The same dungeon on repeat until the axe finally drops, then straight on to the next one.

  3. Step 3

    Pre-raid Best in Slot

    Rare, every slot

The full checklist. Every slot ticked, every reputation grind done, most of them out of pure spite.

  4. Step 4

    Raid Epics

    Epic

Plate pried off things the size of houses. Every piece has a story and an eye-watering repair bill.

  5. Step 5

    The Dream

    Legendary

The one drop every warrior pretends not to want. She wants it. Loudly. Often.

Arms lives and dies by the weapon in its hands. Mortal Strike, Slam and Overpower all hit off that two-hander, so every upgrade is felt the moment it is equipped. Harper treats gear like a war she fully intends to win, one boss kill at a time.

IV · The ArsenalAction bar one

How an Arms Warrior Fights

Arms is a two-handed rage machine. Mortal Strike is the centrepiece, Rend keeps Overpower lighting up, Slam fills the gaps, and she dances between Battle and Berserker Stance for Overpower and Whirlwind. The only real limit is rage, and she has never been short of that.

The Mortal Strike Build

35 / 16 / 0

  • Arms35 All the way down to Mortal Strike and past it
  • Fury16 Extra damage and rage to feed the rotation
  • Protection0 None. She is not here to hold things.

All 51 points at level 60, with a two-handed weapon. The key picks are Mortal Strike, Bloodthrill (which makes Rend worth keeping up, because her main hand hits on that target can light up Overpower), Improved Tactical Mastery to keep rage through stance swaps, Improved Slam, Spearing Strike and Sweeping Strikes.

V · The TruthsCarved, not written

Three Truths

Harper does not do oaths or speeches. She has three truths, carved into the haft of the old wood axe on the wall at Sentinel Hill, and she lives by every one of them.

I

Rage

“Pain is just rage I have not spent yet.”

Every hit she takes feeds her. That is not a metaphor for a warrior, it is how the class works, and Harper took it to heart long before anyone explained it to her. Getting hurt does not slow her down. It gives her more to spend.

She does not hide the anger and she does not apologise for it. She aims it. Every point of rage goes into the thing that is threatening her group, and none of it goes anywhere else.

In practice: never sit on rage, Mortal Strike on cooldown, and save enough for Overpower when it lights up.

II

Earned

“Every piece earned. Nothing given.”

She came from nothing, so nothing on her back was handed over. Every piece of plate is a fight she won, and she can tell you which boss, which night, and who died first. That is why gear matters to her. It is a record of everything she has survived.

It also means she respects the grind in other people. She will run the dungeon one more time for someone else's drop without a word of complaint, because she remembers exactly how long it took for hers.

In practice: know your next upgrade, know where it drops, and keep killing it until it does.

III

Endure

“Knock me down. I get up angrier.”

Westfall burned and she stayed. The sergeant tried to break her and she stayed. Raids wipe, drops go to someone else, bosses take twenty tries. She stays every time, because the one thing that has never once worked against her is getting back up.

Being tough is not about not getting hurt. She gets hurt all the time. It is about still being in the fight when everyone else has decided it is over.

In practice: run back, rebuff, pull again, and never be the one who calls it a night first.

Battle shout

“Get behind me or get out of my way.”

Follow the shouting. She will be at the front of the raid, arguing about loot and winning. If you need someone who will not flinch, will not quit and will not stop talking about her next upgrade, send a whisper.
