The Canal & the Knife

  1. A Name Earned on a Rooftop

Harper grew up where the canals run under Stormwind, in the parts of the city the guards walk through quickly. Nobody there has much, so she learned early that the safest thing to be is unnoticed. By ten she could cross the Trade District at noon without a single merchant remembering her face.

The name came later. A city guard chased her across three rooftops for a sack of apples, lost her, and then had to listen while she told him exactly what she thought of him from somewhere he could not find. Half of Old Town heard it. By morning they were calling her Viletongue, and she has never once considered changing it.

  2. Old Town Lessons

The people who teach rogues in Old Town do not recruit. They notice. What they noticed about Harper was that she could stand in a crowded tavern for an hour and leave nobody able to describe her. They taught her locks, footwork and the art of the opening strike.

Then they taught her poisons, and that was it. Poison is patience you can carry in a vial. It rewards preparation, punishes hurry and does its best work after you are already gone. It was the first lesson that felt like it had been written for her.

  3. Two Daggers

Most rogues pick a weapon. Harper picked two, both daggers, both coated, and learned to drive them in together. Mutilate is not elegant. It is two poisoned blades arriving at once, and every hit brings the next finisher closer.

Her trainers called it wasteful. She called it efficient: two chances for the poison to take, and half as long standing anywhere someone might look.

“If they saw you, you were already too slow.”
  4. Walking WoW Forever Unseen

These days she haunts WoW Forever, mostly in stealth. She slips past whole packs, saps the patrol, picks the one target worth killing and is gone before the rest of the room works out what happened. Groups regularly forget she is in the party until the boss falls over.

There is a rumour that she shares a first name with a very loud paladin in gold plate. Both of them deny any connection. The paladin's hammer did go missing for a week once, and came back polished.

How a Mutilate Rogue Fights

Mutilate is a poison build. Two daggers, poison on both, and a priority that keeps Venom and Slice and Dice running before a single combo point goes into Eviscerate. But for Harper the real game happens before the fight even starts: choosing the pull, sapping the patrol and opening from the dark.

The Mutilate Build

31 / 18 / 2

  • Assassination31 Mutilate · Venom · Seal Fate · Improved Poisons
  • Combat18 Precision · Puncturing Wounds · Flawless Execution
  • Subtlety2 Opportunity, for a little more Mutilate damage

All 51 points at level 60, built entirely around Mutilate, so two daggers are not optional. Seal Fate and Puncturing Wounds turn Mutilate crits into extra combo points, Venom makes her poisons land harder and more often, and Flawless Execution makes Eviscerate cheaper once everything else is running.

IV · The RulesNever written down

Three Rules

Rogues do not swear oaths out loud. Harper's rules were never written down anywhere. She learned each one the hard way, in the dark, and she follows them in this order.

I

Stealth

“If they saw you, you were already too slow.”

Stealth is not a tool she uses. It is where she lives. Everything else in her kit is built on being somewhere nobody expects, at a moment nobody planned for. A rogue who gets seen first has already lost the only advantage that really matters.

So she moves slowly, reads patrol paths before she reads quest text, and knows exactly how close she can get to anything before it starts to wonder. Some dungeons she has cleared without most of the trash ever knowing she was there.

In practice: stay stealthed between pulls, learn the patrols, and never walk where you could creep.

II

Patience

“The opening is everything.”

The canals taught her that hurry is how people get caught. A good opening is worth waiting for: the patrol turning away, the caster stepping out of the pack, the healer looking somewhere else. She will happily wait a full minute for a two second window.

Patience also means preparation. Poisons on both blades before every fight, Sap ready for the patrol, Vanish off cooldown before anything risky. By the time she moves, the fight is already mostly decided.

In practice: poisons up, Sap the extra, wait for the turn, then open with Cheap Shot.

III

Venom

“Let the blade start it. Let the poison finish it.”

Once she commits, she commits completely. Mutilate drives both daggers in, Venom makes every poison hit harder and more often, and Slice and Dice keeps the blades moving fast enough that the poison never stops. It is quiet, steady and relentless.

She never needs the biggest single hit on the meter. She needs the target to stop being a problem, and poison is very good at that. If it goes wrong anyway, rule one applies again: Vanish, reset, and try a better opening.

In practice: Venom first, keep Slice and Dice up, spend extra combo points on Eviscerate, and Vanish if it turns.

Whispered from the shadows

“You will not see me. That is sort of the point.”

You will not. That is rather the point. If something brushes past you in Old Town and your coin purse suddenly feels lighter, wave. She is already gone.
